Estimate your annual carbon footprint and discover how to reduce it
What is a personal carbon footprint?
A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted directly or indirectly by a person. It is measured in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) per year. The world average is about 4.8 tonnes/year, while the Canadian average is 14.2 tonnes/year.
Main emission sources
Transportation (29%): personal car and flights dominate. Food (19%): beef has a footprint 20x higher than legumes. Housing (17%): heating and air conditioning. Consumption (15%): clothing, electronics, etc.
How to reduce your footprint?
Eliminating one transatlantic flight per year: saves about 1.5 tCO₂e. Switching to a vegetarian diet: saves about 0.5 tCO₂e/year. Using public transport instead of a car: saves 2.4 tCO₂e/year. Every action counts in the fight against climate change.
