How to calculate a discount or markdown?

Discount calculation: Final price = Original price × (1 - Discount%). Example: a $120 item with 25% off costs $120 × 0.75 = $90. The savings are $30. Our calculator also handles reverse calculation: finding the original price from the sale price.

Profit margin calculation

Gross margin = (Selling price - Cost price) / Selling price × 100. Markup rate = (Selling price - Cost price) / Cost price × 100. Example: buying at $60 and selling at $100 = 40% margin and 66.7% markup. Do not confuse margin and markup!

Sales and promotions tips

Beware of stacked discounts: -20% then -10% is not -30% but -28%. Two 50% discounts give -75%, not -100%. Our calculator includes a stacked discount mode to calculate the true final price during combined promotions.
